James May's Airfix Spitfire

This is not a real Spitfire, or even a conventional replica. This is in fact the result of a unique project from ex Top Gear presenter James May which was broadcast on BBC television a few years back. Those in the UK may remember these shows which were called James May's Toy Stories. Basically a series of hour long documentaries that were filmed in celebration of toys that we all know and love from our childhood. The idea of the show was to take a much loved toy and use it for the ultimate project. For example one episode featured Lego where they set about building a house with it. Not a small toy house, a real full size house using Lego. There was another episode that featured using meccano to built a real crossable bridge.

Now the episode that this Spitfire featured in was all about Airfix. The project here was to take Airfix's venerable 1:72 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia, a kit that millions of children world wide have built over the years, and scale the kit up to full size. That's right, they made a 1:1 Airfix Spitfire kit on sprues as you'd exprect. The kit was built with the aid of local school children and now sits proudly on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford.
