It does not matter how many manuals you read (and I've read the actual training manuals, the technical manuals, the workshop manuals and know them inside-out) there is no way to describe the complexity and yet simple beauty of the Spitfire and her cockpit. As my late grandfather said to me (he was present at the Battle of Britain, flying over Hampshire and the Isle of Wight) ''everything had its place and that place seemed heaven sent ... I just wish I didn't get cramp in my legs on getting out of that bird.''

Is the tinting of the windscreen an optical effect or did the Spit really have that?

The windscreen is "laminated armoured glass". Even when it's not deliberately tinted, this glass looks tinted as result of the multiple boundary layers that light passes through.
