"This chaff cutter was ‘sent out’ from the Clayton & Shuttleworth Stamp End Works in Lincoln on the 29th July 1909. It was sold to George Thurlow & Sons, Stowmarket along with three 5-knife wheels.
The George Thurlow & Sons ledgers show that on the 29 July 1910 they sold the chaff cutter with two 4-knife wheels to Mr. John Batley of Emley, Yorkshire costing £56 10s 6d. John Batley’s occupation is shown as a ‘Thrashing Machine Owner’ in the 1911 census and his son’s occupation a ‘Traction Engine Driver’.
It was part of a larger sale consisting of a Clayton & Shuttleworth 4ft thrashing machine, no. 41645; and a Clayton & Shuttleworth single cylinder ‘new type’ traction engine, no. 43064; and also a Ruston & Hornsby trusser. The entire order came to a total of £682 15s 6d and was delivered to the Leeds Show.
The Shuttleworth Trust purchased it September 2009 at the auction of the late Ron Vickers collection of harvesting machinery."
